Meet Our Current AmeriCorps Members!

Maryland CASA’s AmeriCorps program is aimed at building the capacity of Maryland’s local CASA programs to serve more of the state’s children. This will be accomplished through various initiatives related to public awareness, volunteer retention, training, and new program development. We are very excited about our five newly oriented MD CASA-AmeriCorps members.

CASA of Baltimore City - Nadiya Atkinson
Nadiya Atkinson is a native of Baltimore County . She attended Essex Community College for two years and during this time volunteered at Hampden Family Center , where she helped tutor disadvantaged youth living in the community. Also around this time, Nadiya traveled to Guatemala City in Guatemala to work with mentally disabled youth in a local orphanage. This experience impacted her tremendously and helped to strengthen her desire to serve her community and led her to serve as a MD CASA AmeriCorps Member for CASA of Baltimore City . She hopes to increase awareness about CASA’s mission, as well as to engage younger adults to serve their community in a meaningful way.

CASA of Baltimore County - Shanae Hamlett
Shanae is a recent graduate of Towson University . Her goal is to publicize CASA so that when someone mentions CASA of Baltimore County the community will know what CASA is and does. Shanae hopes that through the community outreach she provides, CASA of Baltimore County will be able to recruit new volunteers.

Voices for Children of Carroll County - April Mongan
April Mongan, serves as the volunteer coordinator for Voices for Children – Carroll County . April graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelors of Arts degree. April hopes to expand volunteer recruitment and also diversify the volunteer base. April will work to gain community awareness while building media relations for Voices for Children and Maryland CASA.

CASA of Prince George’s County - Cawanna King
Cawanna King is a native of Galveston, Texas, who currently owns a Party Rental Company in Upper Marlboro, Maryland . She is currently working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Legal Studies. She brings to the AmeriCorps/CASA program over 20 years of customer service experience and community service. She is looking forward to helping CASA of Prince Georges County give abused and neglected children a voice and hopes the skills she acquires in the MD CASA AmeriCorps program will allow her to help other non-profits expand their reach.

CASA of Talbot County - Jane Crawford
For over 30 years, Jane Crawford has resided on Maryland ’s Eastern Shore . She owned and operated retail stores. As a MD CASA-AmeriCorps Member, Jane will assist CASA of Talbot County in starting a pilot program for Dorchester County . Jane says it is her hope that over the course of my term, she will be able to assist children in need in Dorchester County .
